EVELO offers high-quality, well-made electric bikes at prices at starting at $2,000. Most notably, they are the one of the few companies who offer a high-end mid-drive motor system, which delivers more torque, power and hill-climbing abilities than a hub motor.
EVELO’s bikes are also the first in the to have ever completed a 4,000 mile Trans-American Electric Bike Tour from New York City to San Francisco.
Going over the Appalachians and the Sierras mountain ranges, the
deserts of Nevada, and other difficult terrain, they performed
well in all conditions.
Finally, EVELO was also the first electric bike in the U.S. to be admitted in the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.
EVELO electric bikes offer a number of features that generally only show up on bikes in the $3,000+ price range.
One of its key advantages is the 250W or 500W mid-drive motor. Unlike a hub motor which simply pushes or pulls the wheel, a mid-drive motor is mounted on the bottom bracket and is connected directly to the crankset. As a result, its power is multiplied though the bicycle gears when transferred through the chain to the wheel.
Allowing the rider to take advantage of the bike gears significantly improves the performance on the hills and flat ground. Even the 250W watt mid-drive motor can generate the same power as a 500W+ hub motor – while at the same time conserving your battery and getting longer range. EVELO can travel up to 40 miles in pedal-assist mode or 20 miles in electric-only on the 36V10Ah Lithium Polymer battery.
The battery, as well as all of the other components, such as the motor
and controller are easily swappable. This is important if you ever need
to do any maintenance on the bike and there is no dealer in your area.
Under the 18-month warranty, EVELO will send you any replacement parts
free of charge and you can easily swap the old one for the new one
within a matter of minutes.
Each model comes with high-end components, such as disk brakes, front suspension and adjustable handlebars. The latter is important as it allows each rider to adjust their riding position to their own comfort level by making the adjustment to the handlebars.
Finally, EVELO also comes with a slew of accessories, including a rear rack, front and rear lights, and fenders.
From Gary Simmons (full review)
Pros: EVELO e-bike has given me my independence back! I haven't owned a car in almost 20 years because I have always ridden my bicycle everywhere I need to go.
Last year was my fiftieth birthday and I began noticing that the inclines and hills were becoming too much for me. The day I had to get off my bike and walk up an especially steep hill, I began considering the purchase of a car because I didn't think I would be able to continue using my bicycle as a primary means of transportation.
Fortunately, I've come across EVELO e-bikes and really liked the Aurora frame. The design was interesting as it's somewhat of a step-through, so getting on and off the bike seemed pretty easy. And I was really intrigued by the mid-drive motor - it just makes so much sense to do it this way.
Anyway, since the closest dealer was about 400 miles away, I was a bit apprehensive about ordering such an expensive product online. But I did and I'm glad I did so.
The bike arrived just 3 days later. Since then, I've put on about 400 miles on the bike and have been really impressed so far. The mid-drive motor really does perform superbly. I've ridden next to my friend who introduced me to electric bikes and his 500W motor and I still am able to go faster than him, especially on the hills.
Overall, the bike is pretty easy handle - even with the extra weight that the motor and battery add. It runs smoothly with power on and is pretty fast and easy to pedal with the power off.
It's solidly made, the customer support has been very responsive whenever I had questions, and the price tag is reasonable. I look forward to many more years of using it.
Cons: On the website, it says that it takes about 15 minutes to assemble it. It probably took me about 30-40 in reality. Still not bad, though. Just needed to put in the front wheel, handlebars and pedals on and adjust the brakes a bit.
EVELO makes for a very strong option. With different designs to suit most preferences, high-quality components and a unique and powerful mid-drive motor, it’s a bike that has it all. Plus, the fact that it comes with an 18-month warranty and starts at just $2,099 with free shipping, it’s more affordable and offers better protection than most of the other options on the market.
